On April 25, 2015 I started testing for my first degree black belt in mixed martial arts and tae kwon do at Freestyle Martial Arts in Reno, Nevada.

Martial Arts Profile

I joined Freestyle in 2011, first in the fitness and BJJ programs to get in shape and have a sport to share with my significant other, and then eventually as a white belt in the mixed martial arts program. I had some experience with kung fu, which I practiced for several years in high school and college, and briefly returned to in 2010. I originally pursued martial arts for self defense, confidence, and fitness (in that order). After several years at Freestyle, I’d have to add community to that list. My favorite aspect of martial arts is jiu jitsu, which is a little ironic because I used to cry on the mat ALL THE TIME. My passion is getting more ladies to love BJJ. Come on Wednesday mornings and roll with me, girls!

Regardless of the sport, it’s important to me to stay active for my emotional well-being. Prior to martial arts, I mostly jogged and did yoga. My favorite running event is the Reno Tahoe Odyssey, and the farthest distance I’ve run was a half marathon. I have a BA in English literature and a minor in Japanese, and I work from home as a web developer. I don’t have kids, but I do have five cats. When I get a spare hour between work and martial arts, I like to play games like Minecraft, Dragon Age or Don’t Starve. I’m 32 years old.

  • 8 minute mile
  • 30 minute three-mile
  • 40 pushups
  • 15 tricep pushups
  • 45 situps (in one minute)
  • 3 minutes of static abs
  • 5 pullups or chinups
  • 100 squats
  • Palms to the floor hamstring stretch
  • 160° center splits
